Dogs possess a high dregree of native intelligence and a pack/hunting culture. Most dogs are pets of Humans.
Beginning in the 21st century BCE, gengineering produced strains of enhanced Dogs (Canis sapiens) who had intelligence on a Human level, and whose mouth and throat parts were altered to allow them to speak. These enhanced Dogs became a partner race to Humans and, although rare, were Makind's constant companion.
Some enhanced Dogs made contact with the Free Peoples of the Scattered Worlds, and as early as the TE 200s there were enclaves of Free Peoples Dogs on Ny and by the TE 300s some Dogs were serving as Galactic Riders.
