Overview:
Maela Gres is a planet that has suffered again and again. It has
the bad luck to be only four parsecs from Messilinia,
right under the nose of the Gergathan.
For over a billion years Maela Gres was a High World of the Pylistroph. (According to legend, Maela Gres was the planet where the Pylistroph started.) Its climate was standardized, its ecology made stable, its landforms sculpted and re-sculpted through cycle after cycle of continental drift. It became a paradise, a planet on which inhabitants could realize any desire.
Then came Mertorthar, and poor little Maela Gres fell almost at once to the Gergathan. The planet was damaged in wars, and in the next hundred million years it became merely a breeding ground for Mertorthar's troops.
Garadhros came, and Maela Gres suffered more. Her core was tapped, her very substance used to build and fuel the Gergathan's ships.
Finally, after ages of agony, Maela Gres was granted a million years of relief, a million years during which the Gergathan's power was reduced to nil and Maela Gres went through cycle after cycle of civilization. Early on, Maela Gres gained independence from the Virgo Cultures, and the planet prospered.
When Diebethar was proclaimed, the Gergathan was no longer in good humor. It struck Maela Gres as it struck all worlds, hard. The world's ecology was ruined, its native population all but wiped out. Then Diebethar took over, and built Maela Gres into a hideously-overpopulated breeding factory for the Gergathan's insatiable war of conquest on the entire Universe. As fast as young were born and trained, they were teleported out in wholesale lots -- replaced by raw materials teleported back in a never-ending stream.
The Reign of Aemallana meant a breathing
spell for Maela Gres, but as soon as Malreppidar
took over, things returned to their previous nightmare state.
The nearly two-million-year interregnum between Malreppidar
and Kaylpeskrit was a more extensive
peaceful time for the planet, but the lightning-fast arrival of
Kaylpeskrit turned the world back into
a planetary madhouse.
